What Homeowners Wish They Knew Before Starting a Remodel

Whether you’re planning a kitchen renovation, finishing your basement, or building an addition, remodeling your home is an exciting opportunity to create a space that better fits your family’s needs. But as rewarding as the process can be, many homeowners discover there are things they wish they had known before construction began.

At McDonald Contracting, we’ve guided homeowners throughout Greater Boston through projects of every size. Here are some of the biggest lessons homeowners often share after completing a remodel and how you can avoid common surprises.

1. Planning takes longer than you think

One of the most common misconceptions is that remodeling starts as soon as you decide to move forward. In reality, the planning phase is one of the most important parts of the process.

Choosing layouts, selecting finishes, reviewing budgets, obtaining permits, and scheduling work all take time. Investing in thoughtful planning helps reduce delays and creates a smoother construction experience. Having the right company to assist with planning can make the process a lot easier.

2. Your budget should include any unexpected events

Even with careful planning, remodeling older homes can uncover hidden issues such as outdated wiring, plumbing concerns, or structural repairs. Setting aside a percentage of your budget for unexpected expenses gives you flexibility if surprises arise, allowing your project to continue without unnecessary stress.

3. Function matters just as much as style

Beautiful finishes are exciting, but the best remodels improve the way you live every day.

Before selecting paint colors or countertops, consider questions like:

  • How do you use the space today?

  • What frustrations do you want to eliminate?

  • Will your family’s needs change over the next five to ten years?

Designing with function in mind creates a home you’ll enjoy long after the latest design trends have changed.

4. Living through construction requires preparation

Depending on the scope of your project, daily routines may be temporarily disrupted. Kitchen remodels often require setting up a temporary cooking area, while bathroom renovations may limit access to essential spaces. Planning ahead and maintaining open communication with your contractor can make the experience much more manageable.

5. Quality work is worth the investment

It can be tempting to compare contractors based solely on price, but the lowest bid isn’t always the best value.

Experienced contractors provide detailed planning, quality craftsmanship, code-compliant construction, and clear communication throughout the project. Choosing a trusted team often saves homeowners time, money, and frustration in the long run. McDonald Contracting is fully licensed and insured and specializes in design-build remodeling throughout the Greater Boston area.

6. Decisions add up quickly

From flooring and cabinetry to lighting fixtures and hardware, remodeling involves hundreds of small decisions. Making selections early helps keep your project on schedule and ensures materials are available when construction begins. Working with an experienced team also makes these decisions feel much less overwhelming.

7. Communication makes all the difference

The most successful remodeling projects are built on trust and communication. Knowing what to expect, understanding the timeline, and having a contractor who keeps you informed throughout each phase creates a more enjoyable experience for everyone involved.

A home remodel is one of the biggest investments you’ll make in your home and the right preparation can make all the difference.

At McDonald Contracting, we’re committed to helping homeowners create spaces that are beautiful, functional, and built to last. From the initial consultation through the final walkthrough, our team focuses on quality craftsmanship, honest communication, and delivering results you’ll enjoy for years to come.
