Beautiful Third Floor Renovation

We’re proud to share this beautiful third-floor addition completed by our team at McDonald Contracting. The dormer build-out was completed by our partner Bob through our newly acquired business, High Tech Dormer, while our team handled the remainder of this Massachusetts house build — including the design, framing and walls, interior finishes, tiling, flooring, windows, trim, and detailed finish work.

This project is a great example of how we help homeowners across Massachusetts better use their attic space, transforming underused areas into functional, well-designed living space as part of a custom home build or renovation. At McDonald Contracting, we’re committed to quality craftsmanship and thoughtful construction on every Massachusetts home build.

5 Reasons to Build an ADU on Your Property

With Massachusetts making it easier and more affordable to build Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs), more homeowners are exploring ways to expand their homes’ potential. If you’ve been thinking about investing in your property, an ADU could be a smart move. Here are five compelling reasons why an ADU might be right for you:

1. Earn Extra Income

An ADU can generate steady rental income, whether you rent it out long-term or occasionally. That extra cash flow can help offset your mortgage, property taxes, or other household expenses.

2. Boost Your Property Value

Adding a legal, well-designed ADU increases your home’s livable space and versatility, which are factors that make a property more attractive to future buyers. This often translates into a higher resale value and stronger market appeal.

3. Gain Flexible, Functional Space

An ADU offers flexible living space that adapts to your changing needs: guest quarters, a home office or studio, a private suite for aging relatives, or a quiet rental, all with their own entrance and amenities.

4. Support Family, Multi-Generational Living or Aging in Place

Need a cozy home for a parent, adult child, or family member who needs extra support? An ADU lets loved ones stay close while also preserving everyone’s privacy and independence. It’s an excellent solution for multi-generational households or long-term care needs.

5. Make Efficient, Sustainable Use of Existing Land

Rather than buying additional land or building a whole second house, an ADU lets you make the most of the property you already own. Especially in a place like Massachusetts, where new lot-size real estate is at a premium, adding a small dwelling unit makes efficient use of space while increasing housing options.

Why 2025 Is a Great Time for Massachusetts Homeowners

With recent statewide changes (see here), ADUs are now allowed by right in single-family zoning districts across Massachusetts. That means simpler permitting and fewer zoning hurdles, making it easier than ever to build.
